Volunteers are an essential part of creating Solstice. Throughout the years, people from close and afar have contributed their hands, hearts, and time to help shape Solstice into what it is today.

It's a great chance to get to know the inner workings of Solstice, learn and hone your skills in festival creation, and have fun with like-minded people.

  • Solstice Champs

    • As Solstice Champ you’ll be helping out in building the festival infrastructure before the festival and tearing it down after.

    • Tasks include but are not limited to setting up fences or decorations, painting objects, and building up constructions before the festival and taking them down after.

    • If you like working with your hands and seeing the results of your work actualise in front your eyes, this could be a position for you.This is a position that requires a good physical condition, a knowledge of how to use tools, and for you to be at the festival site before and after the festival. The entire festival is free time for you.

    • For building we are looking for people who can stay with us for one week. This is the best chance to get to know Solstice inside-out.

    • In your application please choose either 'Heavy Lift Champ', if you're down for hard work and heavy lifting and carrying or 'Deco Champ', if you prefer lighter duties, such as putting up signs and posters.

    • Please read our Volunteer Agreement carefully to gain a good understanding of when we expect you to be at Ruka.

  • Tech Crew

    • As a part of the Tech Crew, you’ll help setting up and tearing down all things tech, or you support our technicians during the event.

    • Lighting & Sound installation: Assisting our team of lighting and rigging professionals with setting up the lighting and sound systems on multiple stages. This includes laying cables, building trusses, installing PA systems and installing the lighting. You might be the one we are looking for if you have:

    • An intermediate knowledge of (or interest in) PA systems and/or lighting setups.

    • Good walking shoes and being okay with working outside in rough terrain and all weathers.

    • Able to push/lift potentially heavy cases.

    • Stage Tech Support: Support our professional sound technicians on one of our stages during the event with tasks including; Soundchecks, artist changeovers, set recordings, noise monitoring and backline maintenance. You might the one we are looking for if you have:

    • An intermediate knowledge of (or interest in) DJ equipment and sound and you enjoy working with artists in a polite and friendly manner.

    • For Lightning & Sound Installation, we are looking for people who can stay for one week with us. Stage Tech Support shifts take place during the festival.

    • Please read our Volunteer Agreement carefully to gain a good understanding for when we expect you to be at Ruka.

  • Artist Care

    • As a part of the Artist Care Team you’ll assist in everything practical regarding artists, from helping them with logistics, keeping them updated on their itinerary and stocking and tidying up the backstage.

    • Stage Host: You will be the first to greet our artists when they arrive at the festival site, and your main job is to look after their wellbeing and hospitality before, during and after their performances. Shifts take place during the festival.

    • You ensure artists have everything they need according to their hospitality rider (fridges are stocked, food and drink requests are met).

    • You are available during their performance to communicate any requests they may have to the relevant teams. If you're a good communicator, love working with people, and know how to respect artist's personal space, this role could be for you. Experience in similar duties is appreciated, but not necessary. Fluent English language skills are required.

    • Runner: As the festival site is at the top of a fell (500m above sea level), we want to transport our artists to and from the stages as smoothly and comfortably as possible. Shifts take place during the festival.

    • As a runner your main job is to pick up our artists from their accommodation (usually in the Ruka Village) and drive them up to meet our stage hosts at the relevant backstage before they perform. After their performances some artists may wish to be driven back from the festival site to their accommodation.

    • Between the pickups we ask you to be available for adhoc jobs (shopping trips for example) or to support our stage hosts if needed.

    • If you're organised, adaptable to change, a good communicator and you know how to respect artist's personal space, then this role could be for you. We will supply the car, so all you need is a licence and fluency in the English language.

  • Cleaning & Recycling Team

    • As part of our Cleaning & Recycling team, your main task is to see that the festival area is in a nice and tidy condition before, during, and after each festival day, make sure all the waste gets properly recycled on the spot and advice the festival-goers about our proper recycling.

    • Solstice aims for minimal environmental impact and collaborates closely with Ruka Kuusamo’s sustainability program, as well as ‘The Most Sustainable European Capital of Culture’ program with Oulu. All the volunteers in the cleaning team will be given guidance for their tasks on site.

    • A good physical condition is important for this role as it includes lots of walking and the terrain is challenging.

    • Shifts in this team take place during the festival and after the festival on Sunday.

  • Wristband Exchange & Info Team

    • As a part of the Wristband Exchange & Info Team you'll be exchanging festival tickets into wristbands, taking care of the accreditation of the artists and answering festival-goers' questions.

    • You will make sure all customers and artists end up with the right wristband swiftly.

    • This task appreciates carefulness and requires a welcoming and friendly attitude, as you'll be one of the first people festival-goers interact with on site.

    • Festival-goers might approach you with many questions, so if your problem-solving skills are on point and you don’t shy out in front of people, this is your spot.

    • Fluent Finnish and English language skills will guarantee everything runs smoothly.

    • Your shifts take place mainly during the festival.

  • Bar Runner

    • As a Bar Runner you’ll be the helping hand for our bar manager and bars. We need you to stock up fridges, take out the garbage and do your best to help everything run smoothly.

    • This role includes some heavy lifting so you need be OK with that.

    • Ability to drive an ATV is a big advantage.

    • Bar Runner shifts take place during the festival.
